Germ 170: The Culture of Nature
 

Course Description

Historical, cultural, and political constructions of nature and human roles in nature, from romanticism to the present, with its ambivalence about naturalness and artificiality, preservation and exploitation, economy and ecology. The emergence of the Greens and other modern ecological/political movements and their roots in 18th cent. romanticism, 19th cent. nationalism, and 20th cent. political correctness. Readings from history, politics, literature, and the social sciences.

Course alternately offered in English or German.
